I found these fresh Gai-lan at WEMART at International City here in Dubai. Gai-lan or kai-lan is Chinese broccoli. It is a perfect side dish or viand in itself.
I saw it first in one of Marion Grasby's recipes and I thought I would like to try that vegetable. This veg is all new to me. I never had it before neither back in the Philippines nor here in the UAE. But it was available when we visited WEMART and I am all for it. The taste of gailan is bitter-sweet with a green, vegetable flavor.
Moving on to the recipe
This dish has 3 main ingredients
1 bunch of gai-lan- 340 grams (Good for 2-3 servings)
5 cloves of garlic or more if you are into garlic (minced)
3 tablespoons of oyster sauce.
You also need
2 tbsp cooking oil
2 tbsp of water
1 tbsp of soy sauce
salt & pepper, & to taste
How to cook Gai-lan
1. Wash gai-lan thoroughly and slice the stems diagonally into thin slices and the leaves chopped into big pieces.
2. In a hot wok or pan, add oil and saute garlic.
3. Add gai-lan stems first and toss for a minute before adding the leaves. Stir for another minute
4. Add water, oyster sauce, soy sauce, salt & pepper. Stir fry until the leaves are wilted but still bright green in color. Put a dash of sesame oil and toss a little more.
5. Transfer to a serving plate and enjoy with steaming jasmine rice or any protein you like.
Great post and interesting topic. Good work.
